Never have I slept in someone’s arms. I have lain beside you, C, and fallen asleep on your pillow while the white glow of your phone lit up your face—my fingers still resting on your ink- stained arms. I have lain on your chest, K, as you fell into a doze and breathed softly in my ear—but I could do nothing more than stare at your face and wonder why. I have lain on your sheets, D, as you rolled over with an arm thrown over your face—and I just gazed up at your ceiling without a trace of sleep in my eyes. No, never have I slept in someone’s arms.

Its red makes me think of carnations, scarlet and blood and revolution—bright flowers adorning the ends of rifles and a soldier kissing a child who has lost his two front teeth. Its orange makes me think of terracotta roofs gleaming in the European sunset, as I coast through the atmosphere on a rumbling, flying, roaring jet engine, as I exhale fear and inhale hope. Its yellow makes me think of plains of golden sun- flowers, stretching out to touch the Spanish horizon, and the way I press my nose against the window to get a better look. I trace your ink-infused skin with my wanting fingertips and I remember the better days. You were younger once and I was sweeter once, and we shared a prison cell called love. You are no longer baby- faced and I have hair down to my waist, and you smoke cigarettes and you drink whiskey because you want to be a man’s man. My feet pound, pound, pound and my breath wheezes, wheezes, wheezes. The pavement is a glistening black under my sneakers, soft tar beneath the beating sun. A trickle of salt touches my lips and I think of the sea. There is a sea pouring from me. Waves crash through my pores and wash away my shores. The salt water of exertion drains my limbs and I just want to fly. But I am tethered to this ground and my I run, oh I run from nothing but my dreams and my fears and my feet pound and my breath wheezes and I know for the last time that I can make it to t h e e n d.

The boys are playing, and I am cringing from these frigid waters. The grains beneath my feet have nowhere to go but everywhere, and I am tiptoeing between these sandy mounds and aspiring dunes. The boys are tackling and roaring, rolling and rolling until their bodies are just sandy creatures of mirth and glee. The sand is in my mouth, and I’m not sure how it got there. The waves roll in and I smell the salty breath, stinging my nostrils in the sweetest way. The water is cold, so cold and the sun is bright and I am brighter.

I'm in such awe.

I haven't been on dA in quite a while. I went away on vacation for three weeks to Europe, and generally just fell behind with all things regarding this website. Today I decided to come back on and see how things were going, and I was utterly amazed and humbled by what I found. One of my poems, november is calling, was featured as a Daily Deviation about a week and a half ago. I honestly never imagined something like this would happen and I'm so happy that it did. I'm sure most of you have heard of Caitlyn Jenner, and her reveal of her new name and appearance yesterday. Personally, I was very happy for her. She looks beautiful (although that is not something that inherently matters to her story or determines her legitimacy as a woman), and she looks happy.
